This Christmas cactus is Papa’s Christmas cactus, named because I adopted it when we cleaned out his house. It was one of the few items he tended to with regularity, bringing it one plastic cup of water each Saturday. My grandmother brought it to the house when I was in seventh grade, so it is 42 years old. The main stems are gnarly and overall it is not an attractive plant, but it blooms from December to April. Funny, I think of Papa everyday.
Not just for Christmas
Through New Year’s and Easter too
Please bloom forever
I think it’s gorgeous. The flowers are amazing. I love the haibun, the way it circles beginning with your father and ending with your father, his caring passed down to you and the love. Lovely writing.
