We live in a “planned community.” Street names, walking paths and lot sizes all meticulously drawn and approved by the zoning committee.
There are only 4 houses out of hundreds in this development (formerly a cotton field) with decks off the back door. The decks are necessary to compensate for the slight slope of the backyards, but what these bastions of pressure treated lumber afford us is an elevated view of the sunrise.

The sunrises and sunsets anchor my days so thoroughly that if we move, a requirement will be the orientation and elevation of the new house to maximize the dawn and dusk.
