Haibun Road Week 16/Feathers

IMG_5225

While visiting my husband (again) in Hot Springs, AR, each morning I walked around the lake path. I began picking up goose feathers thinking they may be a good addition to some future collage. Do you know the Greek myth about Icarus? Every morning he went out to collect feathers, so his father could make them wings to escape Crete. His dad constructed wings out of feathers and wax. When the wings were complete, his dad warned Icarus not to fly near the sun, because the wax would melt. Sure enough, Icarus flew too close to the sun, his wings melted and he fell into the sea.

  1. Love this. The prose is poetic, the haiku perfect and both leaves me wondering where did you try to soar too, was it worth the fall. I love greek myths and know of the Icarus one. It’s an interesting one because his father made the wings but he ignored his father’s instructions. I wonder if Icarus had made the wings himself, if he would have been more careful of his own creation.

    1. Thank you. A book recommendation (modern story/has nothing to do with mythology): I just finished “The Feather Thief” about a man who broke into a British museum and took all kind of exotic bird feathers to make fly fishing lures! Apparently there is a whole underground market for exotic feathers for the art of tying flies.

      1. oh wow, that sounds like an intriguing book. The things that become collectibles and then obsessions often surprises me (looks at my teacups — they don’t count!)
